The Birthday Girl

After about 5 days of snow and ice on the streets the sun finally came out today and I was able to get to my son's home for my granddaughter's 3rd birthday.  She is just such a sweetie. I told her the sun must have come out just for her birthday. This is probably the longest stretch of time ... 5 days ... without me being able to see her since she was 6 months old and I sure was ready to spend some time with her and her baby brother.  Normally when it snows here it is melted off in a day or two but this time we didn't get above freezing  until today.  Night temperatures have been consistently around 16 degrees for a week.  I dread getting my electric bill but I am so very thankful that I have electricity.  My home is all electric so I would have been pretty cold had the electricity gone out.  Because of high winds and ice on the lines about 6,000 families here lost power over this weekend during the sleet and snow.  Have you ever lost power for your heater during a cold spell, and if so, how did you keep warm?

  1. She is such a beautiful 3 year old. Looks just like her grandma!
I don't think I ever remember being without electricity more than a few hours. Our heater is gas but the thermostat is electric. We would certainly be cold, and don't even own any long johns.

    1. Thank you, we think she is beautiful but Grandma used to tell me all the time every old crow thinks her's is the blackest. Lordy, she knew how to keep me humble! I worry more about my pipes freezing than me getting cold.

  2. Your grand daughter is a cutie. I am glad that you did not have to miss her 3rd birthday.
We are used to electrical outages here in our windy area of Vermont. I have plenty of wood for the wood stove and emergency bottles of water. I suppose I could turn on the gas stove if I had to in order to cook something, but so far we have not been without electricity for that long.

    1. Thank you. I worry more about my pipes freezing. I was just so glad to see the sun come out. We are not use to days & days without sunshine here. Hope your weather is looking good so you can travel.

  3. I am glad you made it to celebrate the birthday with your little cutie.
We have never had an extended power outage in cold weather, but I expect we would be off to stay with family or in a hotel until it was back on if it was really cold.

    1. Hi Deb, and welcome to my blog. We are looking for another go round of snow at the end of this coming week. Can't complain since it is December, and we sure need the moisture!
